Contacts Overview
How contacts work in FlowNurture — fields, tags, lifecycle stages, and how contacts connect to workflows and campaigns.
Contacts are the foundation of FlowNurture. Every email you send, every workflow enrollment, and every analytics metric ties back to a contact record.
What a contact includes
Each contact has:
- Email (required) — the primary identifier
- Name fields — first name, last name
- Profile fields — company, job title, country, city, source
- Tags — flexible labels you assign for organization
- Lifecycle stage — SUBSCRIBER → LEAD → MQL → SQL → CUSTOMER
- Scores — lead score and engagement score (Growth+)
- Custom fields — additional data stored as JSON
How contacts are created
- CSV import — bulk import from Contacts page
- Form submission — contacts created automatically when someone submits a form
- Manual creation — add individual contacts from the Contacts page
- API — create contacts programmatically via the public API
Tags
Tags are labels you attach to contacts for organization and targeting. Examples:

Tags can be applied manually, via import, or automatically through tag rules.
Lifecycle stages
Lifecycle stages track where a contact is in your funnel:
| Stage | Meaning |
|---|---|
| SUBSCRIBER | Opted in but no engagement signal yet |
| LEAD | Showed initial interest |
| MQL | Marketing qualified — strong engagement |
| SQL | Sales qualified — ready for outreach |
| CUSTOMER | Converted |
Stages can be updated manually or used in segment rules and workflow conditions.
How contacts connect to the rest of the platform
- Segments use contact fields, tags, and scores as filter rules
- Workflows enroll contacts and send them through automated steps
- Campaigns send one-off emails to contacts matching a segment
- Analytics track engagement per contact and in aggregate
Keep contact data clean
Regularly review unsubscribed and suppressed contacts. Sending to inactive contacts hurts deliverability for everyone on your list.
